Your Team Responsibilities

The selected candidate will join the Sustainability & Climate (S&C) Engineering team, which is responsible for designing and building cloud-native, distributed systems that process large volumes of sustainability and climate data.
The team focuses on delivering high-performance, data-intensive platforms that power analytics, reporting, and client-facing applications across MSCI’s global Sustainability & Climate product suite.

As part of this group, the engineer will contribute to:

  • Building modern microservice architectures using Java and Spring Boot.

  • Developing scalable cloud solutions on GCP or Azure for data ingestion, aggregation, and distribution.

  • Implementing cutting-edge data engineering and compute frameworks to process large datasets efficiently and securely.

  • Advancing the platform’s automation, resilience, and performance while ensuring compliance and data integrity.

The team operates in a collaborative, agile environment—continuously innovating to build a world-class cloud platform that supports the evolving Sustainability & Climate business.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable Java 17 and Spring Boot microservices for data-intensive applications within the Sustainability & Climate platform.

  • Architect and implement distributed systems and APIs capable of processing large datasets efficiently in a cloud-native environment (GCP or Azure).

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineering, DevOps, and product management, to deliver high-quality, reliable, and secure solutions.

  • Own end-to-end delivery of assigned modules — from design, coding, and testing to deployment and post-production support.

  • Contribute to system design discussions, ensuring scalability, resilience, and alignment with platform architecture standards.

  • Implement best practices for performance optimization, security, and observability across cloud-native services.

  • Manage and enhance data catalog, data lake, and distributed processing components supporting Sustainability & Climate analytics.

  • Mentor junior engineers, review code, and promote engineering excellence within the team.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in Java software development, with strong proficiency in Java 17 and Spring Boot.

  • Proven expertise in designing and implementing microservice-based architectures for large-scale, data-driven platforms.

  • Solid experience working with public cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Microsoft Azure.

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, data-intensive applications, and bulk data processing frameworks.

  • Familiarity with data lake architectures, catalog management, and distributed compute technologies (e.g., Spark).

  • Experience with NoSQL databases, as well as relational database systems.

  • Working knowledge of Docker, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Competence in unit testing, integration testing, and modern development practices.

  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.

  • Exposure to DevOps practices and cloud automation is an added advantage.
