Software Engineer (Python + Database + Cloud)

Your Team Responsibilities

MSCI’s Sustainability & Climate platform powers investment decisions for leading global institutions. We build scalable, cloud-native data platforms and applications that transform complex ESG and climate data into actionable insights.

We are seeking a Software Engineer – Cloud-Native Sustainability Data Platforms (Python) at the Analyst level to join our Sustainability Application Development team. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with around 2+ years of experience who is eager to build production systems, deepen technical expertise, and take increasing ownership within a modern data platform environment.

• Build and maintain scalable, cloud-native data platforms that power MSCI’s Sustainability and Climate analytics used by global investors.

• Modernize legacy systems into resilient backend services and structured data pipelines designed for reliability and performance.

• Deliver high-quality engineering solutions in partnership with Product, QA, Data Operations, and Infrastructure teams.

• Ensure systems meet enterprise standards for security, scalability, maintainability, and operational excellence.

• Contribute to automation and AI-enabled enhancements within sustainability data workflows and applications.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance backend services and APIs using Python and frameworks such as FastAPI.

• Build and optimize data pipelines that process ESG and climate datasets in production environments.

• Contribute to cloud-native deployments and containerized applications using Docker.

• Write clean, maintainable, and testable code, participating actively in code reviews and testing cycles.

• Support system performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Collaborate across teams in an Agile development environment, taking increasing ownership of system components over time.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel

• Approximately 2+ years of professional experience building backend or data-driven applications.

• Strong hands-on experience with Python and RESTful API development.

• Understanding of relational databases and SQL

• Exposure to data processing or orchestration tools such as PySpark, Airflow, or DBT is advantageous.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP and containerization concepts.

• Experience with unit testing frameworks such as pytest or unittest.

• Understanding of Agile practices, version control systems such as Git, and CI/CD fundamentals.

• Strong analytical thinking, debugging capability, communication skills, and motivation to grow within a cloud-native data engineering environment.
