Your Team Responsibilities

We are looking for a Carbon Markets Policy Specialist to join our Carbon Markets Policy & Guidance team. The team tracks organizations and governments seeking to shape private sector responses to climate change and the development of the carbon credit market on the path to net zero. This vacancy is for an experienced researcher to join our team and take the lead on carbon market policy research in Latin America.

About the role:

This role will take a leading role on the continued development of MSCI Carbon Markets policy analysis, with a particular focus on the Latin America region. The Carbon Markets Policy Specialist will also be involved in collating qualitative and quantitative data to track organizations, investors and governments seeking to shape corporate responses to climate change and the use of carbon credits.

Key to success in this role will be the ability to generate concise insights from disparate sources of information, covering emerging or fast-moving policy areas and complex standards, reports, and regulations.

The role will be based in São Paulo, Brazil.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:

  • Analysis of national and subnational climate and carbon market policy in a range of countries, including conducting interviews and preparing country profiles.
  • Tracking developments in international policy and standards relating to climate change, net zero and the voluntary carbon market.
  • Qualitative and quantitative research across the policy areas covered by the team.
  • Thought leadership on carbon markets and climate policy, with a focus on Latin America.
  • Supporting MSCI’s COP30 strategy and policy engagement in the region.
  • Communicating insights internally and externally, delivered to clients through client meetings and conferences, plus monthly reporting, an online platform, webinars and other research projects.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel

Successful candidates will have research, advisory or public policy experience relating to climate policy, carbon markets, or corporate climate strategies. This may have been gained through experience with research firms, governments, consultancy, corporate or investor sustainability teams, project developers, think tanks, NGOs, or academia.

Candidates should have a strong team ethic, excellent written communications skills, and be capable of extracting insights and communicating them with clarity to senior-level audiences.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Degree in Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Public Policy, or a related field. Post-graduate degree preferred.
  • At least 5 years’ experience from the public, private, financial or NGO sectors relating to climate change, net zero, or carbon markets.
  • Experience with national climate policy or international climate negotiations is particularly welcomed.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Portuguese. Communication skills in Spanish would be a distinct asset for this role.
  • Proven responsibility for delivering reports, briefings, or other written outputs.
  • Presentation skills to clearly articulate ideas and facilitate strong relations with a global team of carbon and climate research analysts, technology and operations teams.
  • Knowledge across various climate policy issues, with the ability to extract insights and communicate complex issues to senior-level audiences.
  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for addressing climate change in the corporate and financial sectors.

This role is for you if you are:

  • Aware of what a corresponding adjustment is and actively interested in Article 6 debates.
  • Inquisitive, analytical, and naturally inclined to ask, ‘But what does this mean?’, ‘So what?’ and ‘What happens next?’
  • Comfortable both writing a 20-page report and summarizing a new policy development in a sentence.
  • Collaborate generously with your teammates but effective at working independently.
  • Are passionate and pragmatic about how the world can tackle the climate challenge.
